چکیده

The genus Gossypium has a long history of taxonomic and evolutionary study. Much of this attention has been stimulated by the fact that the genus includes four domesticated species, the New World allopolyploids G. hirsutum and G. barbadense (2n = 52), and the Old World diploids G. arboreum and G. herbaceum (2n = 26). These cultivated species embody considerable genetic diversity, but this diversity is dwarfed by that included in the genus as a whole, whose 50 species have an aggregate geographic range that encompasses most tropical and subtropical regions of the world. A remarkable morphological diversification accompanied the global radiation of Gossypium in response to the demands of particular ecological settings and selective environments. Plant habit, for example, ranges from fire-adapted, herbaceous perennials in northwest Australia to small trees in southwest Mexico that “escape” the dry season by dropping their leaves. Corolla colors embrace a rainbow of mauves and pinks (“Sturt”s Desert Rose”, G. sturtianum, is the official floral emblem of the Northern Territory, Australia), whites and pale yellows (Mexico, AfricaArabia) and even a deep sulphur-yellow (G. tomentosum from Hawaii). Seed coverings range from nearly glabrous (e.g., G. klotzschianum and G. davidsonii), to short, stiff, dense brown hairs that aid in wind-dispersal (G. australe, G. nelsonii), to long, fine white fibers that characterize highly improved forms of the four cultivated species. There are even seeds that produce fat bodies to facilitate ant-dispersal (section Grandicalyx cottons from NW Australia). Much of this morphological diversity is lucidly detailed in Fryxell Chapter 1

Analysis of Complete Nucleotide Sequences of 12 Gossypium Chloroplast Genomes: Origin and Evolution of Allotetraploids

BACKGROUND Cotton (Gossypium spp.) is a model system for the analysis of polyploidization. Although ascertaining the donor species of allotetraploid cotton has been intensively studied, sequence comparison of Gossypium chloroplast genomes is still of interest to understand the mechanisms underlining the evolution of Gossypium allotetraploids, while it is generally accepted that the parents were...

Evolution of viruses and cells: do we need a fourth domain of life to explain the origin of eukaryotes?

The recent discovery of diverse very large viruses, such as the mimivirus, has fostered a profusion of hypotheses positing that these viruses define a new domain of life together with the three cellular ones (Archaea, Bacteria and Eucarya). It has also been speculated that they have played a key role in the origin of eukaryotes as donors of important genes or even as the structures at the origi...

Investigation of parent magma evolution and origin of chromites in Cheshmeh-Bid, Neyriz, Fars

: Cheshmeh-Bid chromite deposit is located in Nayriz ophiolite, 200 km northeast of Shiraz. The ophiolite sequences in this area are including ultramafic rocks (dunite, harzburgite, and pyroxenite). In this deposit, chromites are located in the mantle-crust transition zone and are enclosed by a dunite cover. Based on chemical studies of the major elements, chromite is depleted of Al and Ti elem...

Origin and magmatic evolution of the alkaline extrusive rocks of Neogene from Nehbandan-Assagie region, eastern Iran

The alkaline extrusive rocks of Neogene from Nehbandan-Assagie region, eastern Iran, include basanite, hawaiite, mugearite and benmoreite. Relatively low Ni and Cr contents and Mg-numbers of basanites are indicative of olivine and clinopyroxene fractionation from their relevant primary magma. Decreasing of CaO, TiO2, FeOt, HREEs and MREEs with increasing SiO2 indicate fractional crystallization...

A detailed RFLP map of cotton, Gossypium hirsutum x Gossypium barbadense: chromosome organization and evolution in a disomic polyploid genome.

We employ a detailed restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) map to investigate chromosome organization and evolution in cotton, a disomic polyploid. About 46.2% of nuclear DNA probes detect RFLPs distinguishing Gossypium hirsutum and Gossypium barbadense; and 705 RFLP loci are assembled into 41 linkage groups and 4675 cM. The subgenomic origin (A vs. D) of most, and chromosomal identit...

Origin and hydrogeochemical evolution of Azarshahr travertine springs, NW Iran

1-Introduction Travertines are limestones that form where hot groundwaters rich in calcium and bicarbonate emerge at springs. Travertines cover a large area southwest of Azarshahr (East Azarbaijan province), in some parts of which active springs are currently settling travertine. One of the main questions about travertine springs is their origin, as well as the secondary processes that have ch...
